Spinal surgery can seem daunting, but with the proper preparation, you can set yourself up for success. Here are some tips to adequately prepare for your upcoming spinal procedure.
You won’t be able to reach and flex at all after your surgery, so it is wise to put all items you may need around your home within easy reach. This can include anything from your tv remote, kitchen utensils, clothing, health and beauty care items, snacks, books, and phones. Everything should be placed within easy reach of torso height.
A riser will sit on top of your existing toilet bowl, so you don’t have to bend as deeply through your hips, knees, and back.
Preparing your meals, snacks, and all drinks ahead of your surgery will save a lot of excess stress. Mobility will be limited in the weeks after surgery, and you will need to nourish yourself with healthy, balanced meals.
Slip-on shoes and loose clothing will be very helpful, especially when you are still wearing your gauze and bandages right after the operation. Again, your goal should be to make your life as easy as possible, and when you have slip-on shoes, it is one less thing for you to worry about!
Smoking nicotine and drinking alcohol in the weeks before your procedure have the potential for complications after surgery. For example, nicotine can interfere with bone healing and increase your risk for infection when healing. We recommend all patients to stop consuming these substances at least three months before surgery.
Before your surgery, Dr. Jones will create a customized plan for you to follow to adequately prepare for your operation. We will set you up for success so you heal and recover in a healthy, maintained state.
